個人情報の流出が再び大きな問題となっているが、今回の23andMeのようなケースでより深刻なのは、DNAデータという極めてセンシティブな情報が対象である点だ。そしてさらに根本的な問題として、「企業はいつか潰れる」という現実がある。たとえ最先端のセキュリティを誇っていても、倒産後のデータ管理はほとんど不可能になる。
では、こうしたリスクを避ける方法はあるのか？おそらく唯一の解決策は、企業に依存しすぎない情報管理の仕組み、たとえば契約期間終了後のデータ完全削除義務、第三者機関による継続的監査、あるいはデータをユーザー自身が完全に管理できる非中央集権的なシステムなどが求められるだろう。
テクノロジーが進化する今こそ、データ保管の倫理と持続性が問われている。
